Ambleside town centre

The great thing about a holiday to the Lake District and a specially Ambleside is that you are never far from an excellent walk with stunning views.  Stay in one of the many excellent Ambleside hotels and you can leave the car behind as you walk straight out onto the fells or along the lake shore.

Ambleside town centre is easily reached by road, only 20 miles from the M6 motorway, also is served by several bus services, including National Express. Rail travel is to Windermere, four miles away with easy bus and taxi access. In addition there is a direct Manchester Airport/Windermere rail link.

The website www.carfreewalks.org suggests you tried the excellent Fairfield Horseshoe walk starting in Ambleside town centre.  The walk is just under nine miles and should take about half a day, so if you make an early start you will be back in the town in time for well-deserved pub lunch.

You can find a map and detailed instructions on the car free walks website just be sure that you can take a proper Ordnance survey map (Explorers seven lakes SE area) and that you are properly equipped.
